Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the USA, with a rich history that takes in the Revolutionary War and US Civil War so there is much to see and do. The original British settlement was way back in 1680.
Much of the colonial architecture that you see in Charleston today was built through the 1700’s and the Downtown area remains largely unspoilt by modern building.
Apart from the colonial history and architecture, Charleston is also a lively, bustling and cosmopolitan place with markets, street traders selling traditional sweetgrass baskets and more.
Downtown Charleston is very compact so you can explore much that the city has to offer on foot or betaking one of the many carriage rides. Shopping, dining, historic houses and the waterfront are all within a few minutes walk of our featured downtown hotels.
There are a number of historic homes which run daily tours. Alternatively, you can simply walk the streets and take in the elegant architecture before stopping in at one of the many restaurants and bars for a spot of lunch. Be sure to check out our favourite lunch venue, ’82 Queen’.

Perhaps 20 minutes outside the city, along the Ashley River Road, there are three historic homes and gardens. Drayton Hall, Magnolia Plantation, which incorporates the Audubon Swamp Garden and Middleton Place.
Just north of Charleston, off Highway 17, is Boone Hall Plantation which was used for the TV mini series North & South.
Charles Pinkney National Historic Site and Charles Town Landing are other sites you may want to visit.
